Squirrel Hill Adventure

As our Exploring Pittsburgh project we visited Squirrel Hill. Before this trip none of us had been there nor knew how to get there. We hopped on the first 61 bus we saw and made the mistake of getting off when they said "now entering Squirrel Hill" instead of waiting until we got closer. Immediately stepping off the bus we ironically spotted a squirrel. It was a black squirrel.

Moving on, we made the trek up Forbes. During our walk we noticed it was more residential than Oakland, with nice houses. We reached the intersection of Forbes and Murray Street where most of the activity seemed to be. There were dogs, we like dogs. Going down Murray street we walked by many smaller shops and food places. We passed the 61c Cafe, a flower shop, a movie theater, a Coldstone and more to get to Napoli Pizza, where we sampled the menu. The pizza was okay, the Italian hoagie good, and the cheese fries amazing.

We then continued our journey down Forbes. Some noticeable landmarks include the Jewish Community Center or JCC for short and the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh in Squirrel Hill. Our day ended with a short trip back on another 61 bus to make it back home to Pitt.

Upon entering Squirrel Hill we saw a black squirrel, I took it as a premonition that our visit would not be a good one. Luckily, I was wrong, and I enjoyed the visit. Squirrel Hill is essentially a long avenue of various shops. Some were belonging to big companies like PNC Bank and Giant Eagle, others were exclusive like Napoli’s Pizza and the Carnegie Library and the small movie theater. Everything felt near, and I found comfortable there. The streets were relatively clean and the people walking the streets were peaceful. A good word to describe it would be “old-fashioned.”

  1. Yes it was quite ironic how we saw a squirrel upon entering Squirrel Hill. Ultimately the neighborhood was very friendly and buzzing with people shopping at the many stores around the area. The restaurant Napoli's was very nice and the people were very kind. Everything we got was very good, especially the cheese fries. As Brittany described, it was a cute quaint little town with lots to do.
